FLASHBACK

Forty-six years ago, Powell River Regals marched to their first-ever national hockey championship.

February 14, 1970, Powell River Regalsí incredible run to the Hardy Cup Canadian championship began with a third period come-from-behind rally against Comox Totems. The 4-1 victory gave the Regals the first win in a series sweep. It was followed by 25 more playoff games over the next 66 days, gripping Powell River with hockey fever, and culminating in a 3-2 series win over Valí Dour, Quebec in the championship final.

The long and grueling 1969/70 season did not start well. Despite entering the season as defending Coy Cup provincial champions, Regals finished second in their Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey League division. When post-season play began, a third Coy Cup in four years seemed unlikely. But, as history has shown at all levels of hockey, playoffs can be unpredictable. Sometimes the unlikely happens. This historic playoff run is a perfect example. On April 21, 1970, 10 weeks after that first playoff game against Comox, Dave Parenteau capped off a memorable period in Powell River history by scoring the eventual Hardy Cup winning goal on a breakaway late in the fifth and deciding game against Valí Dour.

The current Regalsí roster looks to make a little history of its own when playoff action returns to Hap Parker Arena Friday, March 13, to Sunday, March 15, with a best-of-three Coy Cup qualifying series against Williams Lake Stampeders of the Central Interior Hockey League. Game times are to be announced.
